The $83,000 Line Bitcoin Keeps Failing to Hold
On 1 October a reclaimed moving average and a 90 out of 100 bull score read as confirmation. By 14 October, a hot inflation print and a line that failed four times out of seven said the question was still open.
Three weekly runs, 1 to 15 October 2026.
Lead
Bitcoin closed 14 October at $81,498.52, down 2.1% on the week and below the roughly $83,000 line CryptoQuant has called the test for a confirmed new bull phase. The brief reclassified from bear to early bull on 1 October. Two weeks later, that line has failed more than it has held.

The $83,000 bull confirmation line fails more often than it holds
The pattern across three runs is a retest that keeps getting weaker, not stronger. The month opened by writing the reclaim as decisive: a 90 out of 100 bull score, a 365 day moving average held for the first time since the bear phase began, and a third straight monthly gain last seen in 2012. The middle run showed the line surviving a two day, billion dollar liquidation cascade. The latest run showed it giving ground, closing below roughly $83,000 on four of seven days, after a September inflation print ran hotter than forecast and pushed hike odds for the 28 October Fed meeting back toward even.
That is the nut of this month’s research: a cycle call built on a technical reclaim is only as good as the reclaim holding, and the reclaim is now failing more often than it is passing. It matters because the brief’s own invalidation rule for the deeper bottom case still needs two more conditions it has not gotten: an MVRV reading above 1.6, and three more weeks of spot ETF inflows above a billion dollars, against one so far. The cost of getting it wrong either way is a full quarter: the window this brief narrowed to 30% odds on 1 October, running from 4 October to 30 November, is now five weeks old with nothing in it yet.
The inflation print did the real damage. September headline consumer prices rose 3.7% year over year against a 3.6% forecast, and the futures market’s odds of an October hike jumped back toward even from roughly one in five earlier the same week. A central bank still weighing a hike, after a jobs report two weeks earlier had argued the opposite case, is not the clean easing path bitcoin’s bulls were pricing when the month began.
Institutions
Strategy kept buying through every week of the month’s slide, a fifth straight add that took its holdings past 848,000 bitcoin. Smaller, odder news came from Metaplanet, which disclosed selling 10,000 bitcoin near $78,925 in the third quarter and buying back 11,000 near $86,246, a round trip the company says was meant to show it can convert its treasury to cash on demand for future financing.

Disclosures differ in form: a token, an ETF, a listed equity or a venture stake. Figures are the latest each firm has made public.
What the table leaves out matters as much as what it shows. JPMorgan and Millennium Management both carried their second quarter numbers forward this month because neither has filed a third quarter 13F yet. Those filings are due by mid November, under the standard 45 day window. Millennium had already cut its spot bitcoin ETF position for two straight quarters; whether that becomes three, or stops, is simply not knowable from anything published so far. The same gap sits under every altcoin reading below.
| Asset | Funds holding | Increased | Reduced | Signal | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ripple | 3 | 3 | 0 | ● Mixed | US spot XRP ETFs added about $11.3M in the week to 9 Oct with no negative days, extending the inflow streak to 13 straight weeks even as Solana's streak broke; AUM is about $1.57B. Goldman Sachs, Jane Street and Millennium remain the largest disclosed Q2 13F holders. The earlier, conflicting report that Goldman had exited XRP ETFs entirely remains unresolved; treat Goldman's XRP position with some caution. Bullish in 1 of 3 runs. |
| ethereum | 3 | 1 | 2 | ▼ Bearish | Spot ETH ETFs logged about $542M of net outflows in the week to 9 Oct, led by BlackRock's ETHA at about $477M, after a $138M outflow week the week before; total ETH ETF net asset value is about $15.71B with $13.26B of cumulative inflows since inception. JPMorgan's Q2 13F raised ETHA holdings 338%, while Harvard fully exited its ETH ETF position and Millennium cut ETHA about 34%, both in Q1 2026. Bullish in no run this month. |
| solana | 1 | 1 | 0 | ● Mixed | Spot Solana ETFs lost about $24.8M in the week to 9 Oct, their first outflow week and the largest since launch, ending a 14 week inflow streak; AUM fell to about $1.73B from $1.90B. Bitwise's BSOL had taken most new money in the category through the streak. Bullish in 1 of 3 runs. |
Ether’s spot ETFs logged their worst outflow week of the month, over $500 million, while a conflicting report about Goldman Sachs exiting its XRP ETF position, flagged with caution since September, remains neither confirmed nor retracted.

Daily close, drawdown from each cycle's peak. The band and the months below it are this cycle's. The 2013 line traded in a thin market. The 2013 and 2017 lines run off the top of the chart to 17.3x and 3.4x.
| Metric | Mean |
|---|---|
| Halving to peak, days | 540 |
| Peak to bottom, days | 365 |
| Max drawdown | -80.2% |
This cycle’s low, if 30 June already holds it, sits at a 53.1% drawdown, roughly half of what the 2018 and 2022 troughs reached at the same point. The chart still shows two outcomes open: a holder base thin enough on leveraged risk that the fall simply does not go as deep this time, or a fall that has not finished falling. Three straight weeks of a failing retest do not resolve which; they just mean the brief is not ready to call it from the technical read alone.
Counter argument
The strongest case against reading this month as deterioration is that every number moving against bitcoin moved less than the number before it. Spot ETF outflows fell over 80% week on week, from $681.1 million to $112.8 million, and the year’s cumulative flow actually recovered, from about $538.6 million back to $648.8 million. The Fear and Greed index never left Greed on a losing week. Strategy’s buying never paused.
Put together, that reads as a market absorbing a real shock rather than breaking down: the CPI print was genuinely hotter than forecast, and price still closed every day above $78,000, the one leg of this brief’s own invalidation rule that has held since early September. If the Fed’s 28 October decision comes in dovish despite the hot inflation print, this month’s single weakest data point becomes next month’s clearest reason the reclaim was real all along.
Scorecard
The wrong call this month was mine. On 12 October this brief wrote that “the bull confirmation level held on its first real retest.” Two days later, that read looked premature: price closed below the same line on four of the week’s seven days, a worse showing than the single breach the week before. The level in question has not broken down. It has just stopped being the clean signal the 12 October run described.
Eleven claims from this month's research are still open, the earliest due 19 October.

Coins to follow
Three of the ten resolve on a single calendar date next month: Goldman Sachs’ and JPMorgan’s third quarter filings, due by 14 November, will show whether this brief’s caveats on ether and XRP exposure were warranted or overcautious. Read the Fed decision first; nearly everything else on the list sits downstream of it.

Prediction
Bitcoin closes at least one full week back above $83,000 before 30 November 2026, confirming the reclaim this brief called on 1 October, or the bottom window it narrowed to 30% odds that same day closes with no low printed and the reclaim still unconfirmed.
